Twilight

György Fehér's 1990 Hungarian film opens with the hunt for a child killer and then refuses to be a detective story. A respected investigator sustains his obsession long after he has been taken off the case, sinking in the wooded provinces, in mist and half-light, into a search that never promises resolution. The script departs from a text by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, but instead of tightening the plot Fehér keeps widening it; the narrative does not close on the killer, it collapses inward into the detective. The film is black and white, the takes are very long and time is deliberately stretched. Béla Tarr advised on the production, and the formal kinship between the two directors is plain. The result turns the machinery of genre into an experience built on despair. Who it's for: viewers who love slow cinema and Hungarian formalism. Who it's not for: anyone waiting for a murder investigation to be solved; the film never intended to supply the answer.
