What Passion Is About

A woman and her lover plan to kill her older husband. The story comes from the novel The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. György Fehér moves that novel to Hungary in the nineteen thirties. He wrote the screenplay together with Béla Tarr. The film was shot in black and white by Miklós Gurbán and Tibor Máthé. What is told is less the killing itself than what comes before and after it. The way two people bind themselves to each other and to the plan is shown step by step. The work turned out to be Fehér’s second and last feature. Ildikó Bánsági and János Derzsi appear in this Hungarian film of 1998, shown at Cannes in Un Certain Regard.
