What An Inspector Calls Is About
The wealthy Birling family is celebrating their daughter's engagement when a police inspector arrives with news that a young woman has died. As his questions travel round the table it emerges that every person there had crossed her path, and that each of them did her a small, deniable harm. Adapted from J. B. Priestley's 1945 play, the film is built on class and responsibility: guilt is not lodged in one person but distributed across a dinner party's ordinary decisions. This is the 1954 version with Alastair Sim, not the 2015 BBC film.
