Satantango

A few families left on a collapsing collective farm plan to share out the last money and leave. A man presumed dead comes back to the village and persuades them all. The film is divided into twelve parts and shows the same days again through different eyes. The takes are extraordinarily long; the camera follows people walking for minutes at a time and the rain almost never stops. The structure tests patience deliberately. Bela Tarr directed, adapting Laszlo Krasznahorkai's novel. It is in black and white. A real warning: it runs over seven hours and contains a long scene of cruelty to a cat that was argued over for years. The death of a child is also at the centre of the narrative.
