What Pelle the Conqueror Is About

The end of the nineteenth century. Lasse and his young son Pelle cross from Sweden to the Danish island of Bornholm looking for work, and take the lowest place on a farm: a bed in the stable, almost no wage, no respect at all. The father is old and worn out, and dreams of America, though every year produces a reason not to go. As Pelle grows, he sees that his father can no longer protect him or even hold himself upright. Von Sydow plays diminishment with enormous dignity.
