The Turin Horse

A carter and his daughter live alone on a plain where the wind never stops. For six days they do the same things: water from the well, boiled potatoes, harnessing the horse. The horse refuses to walk. The film builds no incident beyond that; the narrative shows diminishment, something less each day, and on the last day the light goes too. It is made of around thirty long takes with the camera almost constantly moving. Bela Tarr directed and announced it would be his last film. It is in black and white, with music by Mihaly Vig. It won the Silver Bear in Berlin. Who it's for: those who like extremely slow, formalist cinema. Who it's not for: almost everyone; nothing happens for two and a half hours, deliberately.
