What Goodbye, Dragon Inn Is About
A rainy night in Taipei, and an enormous, almost empty cinema is about to close for good. On the screen is King Hu’s wuxia classic Dragon Inn. In the auditorium there are a few spectators, a ticket clerk with a limp, the projectionist and possibly a ghost or two. Tsai Ming-liang uses almost no dialogue and gives us long static shots of empty seats, corridors and rain. Among the audience sit actors from Dragon Inn itself, watching their own younger faces. An elegy written for cinema.
