It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley drowned while swimming in a river near Memphis in 1997; he was thirty and left one studio album behind. The documentary tells his life from childhood: the famous father he never knew, the coffeehouse scene in New York, the Sin-é recordings, and Grace. The subject is not the legend but how the voice was built. Buckley did not want to carry his father's name and spent his career avoiding the comparison; the film sets that comparison up and takes it apart. The form leans on archive and is extremely personal: answering machine messages, notebooks, home recordings, footage never released before. Access to that material matters as much as the film. Buckley's mother Mary Guibert opened the archive she had been protecting for years; Brad Pitt supported the digitisation and preservation work and became one of the executive producers. Amy Berg directs. It premiered at Sundance in 2025 and reached cinemas that August. Ben Harper and others from Buckley's circle speak in the film. Who it is for: Buckley listeners and viewers who like archive-based musician portraits. Who it is not for: anyone expecting critical distance; the film was made with the family archive and never drops its reverent tone.
