RM: Right People, Wrong Place

Lee Seok-jun's documentary records the eight-month production of RM's second solo album. The camera follows him in the studio, on trips and in his free time; the narrative rests less on how the album took shape than on what the person making it is thinking. What makes it interesting is the artist stating his discomfort with his own position openly. The difference between being part of a group and working alone, the weight of expectation and his anxiety about how his music will be received are all discussed directly. The idea in the album's title comes from there. A section covers his relationship with art, architecture and books. Those passages separate the documentary from promotional material. Even so it was produced within the artist's own circle and there is no critical distance. Who it's for: those who follow RM's music and are curious about how albums get made. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an independent portrait; the documentary was prepared under its subject's control.
