SUGA: Road to D-DAY

The documentary follows SUGA of BTS while he prepares a new album. The journey starts in Korea and reaches Tokyo, Las Vegas and other cities, working with other musicians at every stop. The camera is in the studio, in hotel rooms and on the road, and the process is shown from first versions of songs to final ones. Park Jun-soo directs. Halsey, Steve Aoki, Anderson Paak and IU appear. The most discussed passage is the meeting with Ryuichi Sakamoto. The Japanese composer was gravely ill at the time and died in March 2023, shortly before the documentary appeared; the footage is among the last of him. The subject is not fame but being stuck. SUGA works without knowing what the album is about, and the film does not try to correct that uncertainty. It is personal work separate from the group; the members of BTS had moved to individual projects in that period. The production was made by the group's own company and carries no critical distance. Who it is for: BTS listeners and anyone curious about how records are made. Who it is not for: there is no narrative for a viewer indifferent to the artist, the structure is loose, and the film can also be read as promotion.
