BTS: THE RETURN

Seven people come together after a long break. All of them completed their compulsory military service and worked apart during that time. They meet at a studio in Los Angeles. The aim is to record a new album. The documentary follows the process. The studio sessions run two months, then continue in Seoul. The camera takes not only the recording but the gaps between: exhaustion, blocks, disagreements with each other and with their label. Some of them discuss whether the group will continue. Bao Nguyen directs. The seven members appear in the film. Nguyen first put the idea forward after seeing a stadium concert in 2021; the company contacted him in 2025 before the recording began. Netflix made an agreement to livestream the group's comeback performance and release this documentary; the announcement came on 3 February 2026. It was released on 27 March 2026. Its subject is the album itself; the recording is shown piece by piece and how the songs were built is followed. The documentary does not hide the tension in the group and that choice was pushed in the publicity. The narrative stands between addressing the fan base and being a documentary about making work. Its limit is viewpoint; the production was made with the group's approval and the critical distance is limited. Who it is for: listeners of the group and viewers who like documentaries about making music. Who it is not for: it is closed to anyone unfamiliar, the viewpoint partisan, and it runs long.
