What Live from New York! Is About
For forty years Saturday Night Live has both reflected and shaped life in the United States, answering election campaigns, disasters and every era of popular culture in its own language. Bao Nguyen’s documentary goes backstage and asks when comedy collides with politics and when it legitimises it instead. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Alec Baldwin and many others speak. It does not hide that it is a celebration, and it still manages to show both the power and the limits of making jokes about an entire country live on air.
