What Too Funny to Fail: The Life & Death of The Dana Carvey Show Is About
Too Funny to Fail: The Life & Death of The Dana Carvey Show, released on Hulu on October 21, 2017, documents the show's infamous 1996 opening sketch, in which Dana Carvey's Bill Clinton opens his shirt to reveal a baby doll nursing, then additional nipples nursing real puppies and a cat, an idea pitched by Louis C.K. Six million viewers changed the channel after that opening, and ratings never recovered; ABC canceled the show after airing only seven of its planned ten episodes. The writers' room included Louis C.K., Charlie Kaufman, and Robert Carlock, with a cast featuring then unknowns Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. Who it's for: anyone curious about a show that lost six million viewers over one opening sketch despite a writers' room and cast full of future stars. Who it's not for: viewers wanting the story of a successful, long running TV production, since this is a failure story.
