Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk

Sepideh Farsi's 2025 documentary is made entirely of video calls. Over a year, the Iranian director spoke regularly with Fatima Hassouna, a young photographer living in Gaza; the connection drops constantly, the image freezes and the power fails. Fatima describes life under siege: finding food, moving house, losing relatives and continuing to take photographs regardless. The film describes the war not through footage shot from outside but from one person's own screen, and that limitation determines its form. In the days when she learned the film had been selected for a sidebar at Cannes, Fatima was killed in an airstrike along with nine members of her family, and the documentary therefore stopped being a record and became a commemoration. Who it's for: viewers who can take war documentary and personal testimony. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach this subject now; news of deaths arrives throughout.
