I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not

Chevy Chase was in the first cast of Saturday Night Live and became the show's first star. He left after one season and moved into film; with Caddyshack, Fletch and National Lampoon's Vacation he stood at the centre of American comedy in the 1980s. In those same years he fell out with almost everyone he worked with. Over time he became unemployable, and his last job ended for the same reason. Marina Zenovich's documentary holds two things together: the size of the talent and the cost of the personality. The narrative does not defend Chase, but neither does it present him only as a bad man; the people who worked with him tell both sides. Beverly D'Angelo, Dan Aykroyd, Goldie Hawn and Lorne Michaels are among those who speak. Chase himself sits in front of the camera. Who it's for: Anyone interested in the history of American comedy, Saturday Night Live, and portraits of performers. Who it's not for: The narrative depends on the references of a particular generation. Some accounts of Chase's behaviour are also uncomfortable to watch.
