What Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind Is About
Marina Zenovich builds her portrait of Robin Williams out of archive footage and audio, which means Williams largely narrates himself. Stage sets, television appearances, rehearsal tapes and private material are stitched together. The question it actually pursues is speed: how the improvising machine worked, and why that velocity both saved and exhausted him. People close to him speak, and most circle the same thing, the complicated relationship between the man on stage and the man in the room. It does not skip the addiction years or the illness at the end, but it does not sensationalise them either. HBO released it in 2018. Who it is for: viewers curious about stand-up history and about how Williams actually worked. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a portrait with critical distance, since this one sits openly on the side of affection.
