Everybody’s Everything

The documentary follows the life of the rapper Lil Peep, who died at twenty-one, from his childhood in Long Beach through to the end. Most of the material comes from the family and friends: phone video, home tapes, tour footage. Two people are at the centre, his mother Liza and his grandfather Jack. The grandfather wrote his grandson long letters over the years, and those letters form the film's narration. The film is less interested in a music career than in the fact that everyone around him wanted something from him. Peep's rise in the emo rap scene and the limit of what his body could take advance at the same speed, and nobody wants him to stop. Sebastian Jones and Ramez Silyan directed. The executive producers include Terrence Malick, Liza Womack and Sarah Stennett. The title comes from a post Peep made the day before he died: I just wanna be everybody's everything. It premiered at South by Southwest on 10 March 2019 and opened in cinemas on 15 November 2019. Who it is for: anyone drawn to music documentaries and portraits of artists who died young. Who it is not for: anyone wanting critical distance. The film stands very close to the family, does not dig far enough into the industry's responsibility, and the last section is heavy.
