What Echoes from a Sombre Empire Is About
Werner Herzog's documentary is about the rule of Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who took power in a coup in 1966 and proclaimed himself emperor in 1976 in Central Africa. The man who carries the film is the journalist Michael Goldsmith, who had been imprisoned and tortured under that government and now returns to the country, speaks to witnesses and walks through the remains of the palace and the coronation grounds. The film gives a great deal of room to accounts of plunder, arbitrary imprisonment and mass execution, and the allegations of cannibalism are discussed at length. The documented record is this: at his 1987 trial Bokassa was convicted of murder and related crimes and acquitted of the cannibalism charge. Herzog is inside the film as its narrator.
