What Stroszek Is About
A man leaves a Berlin prison, plays music badly, cannot really defend himself against anyone, and travels to America with two companions. Werner Herzog cast Bruno S., whose own life resembled the part in unsettling ways, rather than a professional, and that choice governs the whole tone: nothing here ever looks like acting. The Wisconsin sections do not argue against the American dream so much as simply exhibit it, the trailer home, the bank clerk, the open ground. Even the funny passages are cold. The closing sequence is one of the strangest in cinema and flatly refuses to explain itself.
