What Grizzly Man Is About
Werner Herzog's 2005 documentary follows a man who spent his summers among grizzly bears in Alaska. He filmed himself for years. In his last season he and his companion were killed. The film joins his footage to accounts from witnesses; the narrative questions the romanticising of nature directly. It was assembled from around a hundred hours of material. The director enters as narrator. The audio recording of the deaths is deliberately not played. Who it's for: those who like nature and character documentaries. Who it's not for: viewers unprepared for death discussed in detail; the film takes it up directly.
