What The Fog of War Is About
Robert McNamara, who ran the American defence department through the Vietnam war, sits down at eighty five and talks through his own decisions. Errol Morris does not put him on trial, and that restraint is exactly what makes the film hard to sit through: the more clearly McNamara explains himself, the less defensible he becomes. Because Morris films his subjects looking straight down the lens, McNamara appears to address the viewer personally, which creates an intimacy nobody asked for. It opens in the language of lessons learned and closes on the question of how late regret is allowed to arrive.
