What 80 Blocks from Tiffany's Is About
Gary Weis's documentary follows daily life between two gangs in the South Bronx at the end of the 1970s, the Savage Skulls and the Savage Nomads. The title is about distance: eighty blocks from the most expensive windows in Manhattan, there are young people living among burnt out buildings and empty lots. The camera films them neither in the language of a crime report nor with admiration; they talk, they explain their own rules, and they pause when the future comes up. That is where the film's power lies, in showing what it means to grow up inside that violence rather than explaining the violence. A priest who works in the neighbourhood also speaks. It is short, and one of the most direct records of that New York.
