What Jimi Hendrix Is About
The documentary was made not long after Jimi Hendrix's death. To tell his life and his music it puts family, friends and the musicians he worked with in front of the camera; among them Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Mick Jagger. Between those sections there is concert footage: Monterey, Woodstock, the Isle of Wight and Berkeley. Joe Boyd, John Head and Gary Weis directed the film together. The telling does not set out to build a legend; that Hendrix made his name in Britain and came back to America from there, the effect of race on his career, and the exhaustion of his last years are all discussed openly. It does not go into the detail of his death. The concert footage is the film's strongest side.
