What A Bottle in the Gaza Sea Is About
Tal is seventeen, a girl who came from France with her family and settled in Jerusalem. After an attack in the city she writes a letter refusing to accept that nothing but hatred can exist between Israelis and Palestinians, seals it in a bottle, and her brother, doing his military service, throws it into the sea off Gaza. It reaches Naim, who is twenty, and the two of them begin to write. Thierry Binisti adapted Valérie Zenatti's novel with the author. The film does not pick a side; it shows what presses on each of them where they live, the anger and the limits, separately. A hundred kilometres lie between them, and checkpoints, a closed border and what the two societies think of each other make that distance uncrossable. Mahmoud Shalaby plays Naim.
