What A Dangerous Toy Is About
A meek accountant buys himself a pistol and discovers at the range that he is a natural shot. When the friend who introduced him to shooting is killed by gangsters, he goes after them. Giuliano Montaldo's 1979 film puts Nino Manfredi, an actor known for comedy, somewhere else entirely, and that displacement is part of its effect. What interests the story is less crime than the gun itself: what it gives an ordinary man once it is in his hand, what it makes easy, and why putting it down turns out not to be possible. In Italy at the end of the seventies that was not an abstract question.
