Grand Slam

Professor James Anders taught for thirty years in Rio de Janeiro and has retired. Across the street from the school is a diamond company; he watched it from his window for years. Now he brings a plan: on carnival night, while the city dances in the street, the vault will be emptied. He assembles four men, one for the safe, one a thief, one a mechanic, one to handle the women. In front of the vault there is also an alarm that hears and feels. The carnival starts, and the noise outside is the only cover the team has. Giuliano Montaldo directs; a hundred and twenty-one minutes, with Edward G. Robinson as Anders and Janet Leigh, Klaus Kinski, Adolfo Celi and Robert Hoffmann in the cast. Ennio Morricone wrote the score. The turn at the end is one of the most cited finishes in the heist films of the sixties.
