Hoodwinked!

Cory Edwards directs with his brother Todd Edwards and Tony Leech, but the shape came from Todd, who set the fairy tale inside nonlinear crime pictures: Rashomon, Pulp Fiction, Run Lola Run, Memento. Entrepreneur Maurice Kanbar agreed to fund it before a finished script existed, and his first plan was to send it straight to DVD. The animation was made in Manila at Digital Eye Candy, a studio set up in a rented house for the job; Edwards flew there 15 times across a three year production. The coarse look is not only budget. The crew chose to imitate the stop motion surfaces of Rankin-Bass and gave Red four fingers so she would read as a doll. The famous voices came last. When The Weinstein Company took the film on, six parts were recast, Anne Hathaway over Tara Strong and Glenn Close over Sally Struthers. The animation was largely done, so the new actors had to match the earlier readings. At the 32nd Saturn Awards it was nominated for Best Animated Film and lost to Corpse Bride. A good fit if you want the same forest night replayed by four separate witnesses and can read the rough surfaces as a choice. Not for anyone expecting loose improvisation from that starry cast; the sessions were locked to the earlier readings.
