Sing 2

Garth Jennings moves Buster Moon and his company to Redshore City, where Buster pitches a space themed musical and promises a star he has never met: Clay Calloway, a lion who stopped performing fifteen years earlier when his wife Ruby died. Bono voices him. The song list is effectively built around U2. Where the Streets Have No Name, Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, sung by Scarlett Johansson with Bono, all appear, and U2 wrote a new song for the film, Your Song Saved My Life. The rest are covers as well; Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy is handled by Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, Reese Witherspoon and Nick Kroll. Kate and Laura Mulleavy of the fashion house Rodarte designed the costumes for the closing show, work they began in 2018; Kate Mulleavy says that even in animation the point was that the clothes move correctly. The villain strand is harder than the format suggests: the wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal dangles Buster off a hotel roof and tries to kill him again during the finale. A good fit if you want a jukebox weighted towards U2 and a story that resolves as a plot about grief. Not for a parent whose child will take the roof scene badly.
