Minions: The Rise of Gru

Kyle Balda’s film slipped three times, not only on the pandemic calendar: Illumination’s Paris studio shut with the picture unfinished, pushing a summer 2020 release to July 2022. The period comes from the music: Jack Antonoff assembled the album, having present day artists re-record seventies material: Diana Ross with Tame Impala on Turn Up the Sunshine, Kali Uchis on Desafinado, St. Vincent on Funkytown. Universal had Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade cut a trailer and commissioned Rich Minion from the rapper Yeat: a children’s film sold to teenagers. It worked. Opening week brought groups of young men in suits, Odeon restricted entry to some screenings, and Universal posted that it saw and loved them. The domestic opening was 107 million dollars, the worldwide gross 940 million. The villain gang is voiced by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Danny Trejo beside Taraji P. Henson; that joke is for the parent in the next seat. The Chinese release ends differently: a card says Wild Knuckles was caught and served twenty years, while Gru returned to his family, his greatest achievement fatherhood to three girls. A good fit if gags resting on the minions rather than Steve Carell do not bother you. Not for anyone wanting Gru’s villainy to cost him: in the international cut he rides off with his thieving mentor.
