Hoppers

Daniel Chong first pitched the film with penguins. Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, turned them down: Happy Feet, Penguins of Madagascar and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl had used them. Chong read up on beavers instead and found his subject: a beaver is an ecosystem engineer whose dam keeps other species alive. That is where the animal side gets its politics. Chong returned to Pixar late in 2020, after We Bare Bears, and development ran six years. The influences he names include Takahata’s Pom Poko and the nature documentaries that drop robot animals in among real ones. Two unrelated Francos are cast: Dave Franco as Titus the butterfly villain, Eduardo Franco as Loaf the beaver, with Meryl Streep as the Insect Queen. Mark Mothersbaugh’s score is his first for a Pixar feature; SZA wrote and performed the end credits song. Marketing ran ahead of the film through a lizard called Tom, introduced in a teaser after Elio’s end credits. Beaverton, Oregon declared March 5 Hoppers Day. A good fit if you want the Animal Council to behave like a parliament and the beaver dam to turn into a plot device in the last act. Not for anyone expecting the quiet sadness of other Pixar originals; this one stacks an assassination plot, a coup and a wildfire.
