Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Januel Mercado shares the direction with Joel Crawford, who joined in the spring of 2021, and the storybook painting look came from production designer Nate Wragg. The technical decision worth knowing is that the animation does not run at one constant rate. Heroic action is stepped, holding poses across several frames, while the moments when the cat is frightened and short of breath return to animating on single frames. Crawford has explained the reasoning plainly: the fantastical should feel unreal, and the fear should stay real. That is genuinely useful while watching, because the smoothness of the image is telling you when to believe the character. Death is not treated as a metaphor either. The wolf hunting him is shot like a horror villain and the panic attack is played without softening, so families buying tickets on the strength of the franchise should expect a markedly higher tonal target than the earlier picture had. Structurally the film runs three separate crews across one map, which keeps the middle busy but parks its strongest antagonist offscreen for long stretches. It opened to 12.4 million dollars across five days, rose thirty five percent in its second weekend rather than falling, and was nominated for the animated feature Academy Award.
