The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The Lego Movie 2 (2019) is set five years after the invasion at the end of the first film. At the end of the first film, creatures made of Duplo bricks arrived. Since then the city has been wrecked and turned into a desert town called Apocalypseburg. Everyone behaves dark and hard; Emmet is still cheerful and it isolates him. A general from the Systar System arrives and abducts five people including Lucy. Emmet goes to get them back. The film's real layer is again outside. All of it comes from an argument over toys between two children in the real world: an older brother and his little sister will not share, and their mother threatens to put everything in the basement. The first film kept that as a surprise for the end. Unable to repeat the trick, this one opens with it and makes the sibling relationship the actual subject. Mike Mitchell directed; Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who made the first, only wrote this one. One song was written deliberately to be impossible to get out of your head and says so in its lyrics; that is the joke. The animation again respects real Lego physics: everything must be buildable from bricks, and even water is made of bricks. It took far less than the first film and the series stopped there. Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Tiffany Haddish provide voices. The humour is fast and reference heavy; some jokes go over children's heads. It runs 107 minutes. Good for: animated comedy, family viewing, and fans of the first. Less good for: the structure repeats the first film and the surprise is gone.
