A Distant Place

Park Kun-young's 2021 Korean film follows Jin-woo, who works on a sheep farm in a mountain village. A young girl is with him and nobody in the village asks. Then his lover and his twin sister arrive one after the other. The subject is silence establishing an order. Jin-woo had gone on living without explaining himself to anyone; with the arrivals, the village has to reposition both him and itself, and the matter becomes not a confrontation but a quiet exclusion. The narrative does not reach for large events. Seasons, tending animals and everyday work fill most of it; the camera keeps its distance and the landscape stays visible. The emotional rise is saved for the final section. Who it's for: those who like Korean independent cinema and quiet queer drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a defined plot; very little is said across the film.
