What A Dog’s Life Is About
Nino Martoni runs a ramshackle variety troupe, moving from stage to stage in postwar Italy. Each of the young women in the company hopes it will take her somewhere: Franca has left her poor boyfriend Carlo for the promise of an easier life, Vera is in love with Mario, the son of a well off family, and Lucy is playing for stardom. The three of them end up in very different places. Directed together by Mario Monicelli and Steno, this bittersweet comedy tells the world of avanspettacolo from the inside. Aldo Fabrizi takes the lead, with Gina Lollobrigida, Delia Scala and a young Marcello Mastroianni alongside him. Mario Bava shot the film and Nino Rota wrote the music.
