A Foggy Tale

Chen Yu-hsun's 2025 Taiwanese film is set in 1953, during the martial law period known as the White Terror. Yue's brother has been executed for what he thought, and she travels alone to Taipei to take his body back to their village. She does not know what to do in the city, nobody tells her anything, and even obtaining a death certificate proves impossible. Chao Kung-tao, a discharged soldier, decides to help her, and the two try to bring a body home. The film does not present the period as a lesson in politics; it shows the fear in people's silence and evasions. Humour sits inside the story and keeps it from turning heavy. It was named best film at the Golden Horse Awards. Who it's for: viewers who like Taiwanese cinema and historical drama. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a brisk account; the film moves at the pace of a journey.
