A Great Day in Harlem

The year is 1958. Esquire is putting an issue together. Art Kane is to take a photograph. The jazz musicians of New York are to be in it. Word goes out. The number who turn up is startling. Almost every important name of the time comes. They gather in a street in Harlem. The building is near the 125th Street station. The photograph is taken in front of the steps. The documentary is about that day, with interviews with the musicians who were in the picture. Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins are among those who speak. Film shot that morning by Milt Hinton and his wife is used as well. Jean Bach made the sixty minute documentary, an American production finished in 1994.
