A Home Too Far

The Chinese Civil War ends at the start of the nineteen fifties. The Republic of China is defeated and a new government holds the mainland. Soldiers of the ninety third division take their families with them. They leave southwestern China and cross into northern Burma. The march through the forest costs them heavily. Food and medicine run short. Those who survive reach the far side of the border. They build a village there. They hold out against attacks by the Burmese government. They make an alliance with an armed group in the region. Years later the government in Taiwan sends word. It offers to take the soldiers and their families to the island. Some accept the offer. Others are bitter toward that government and choose to stay. The film tells the war through those left behind rather than the victors. Tou Tsung-hua and Ko Chun-Hsiung appear in the one hundred twenty five minute film, a Taiwanese production Kevin Chu finished in 1990.
