A Love Song

Faye is camping alone in a trailer by a lake in the Colorado mountains. She fishes, records birdsong, works the radio, and waits. The person she is waiting for is Lito, her childhood sweetheart. Both are widowed, and after decades they have agreed to meet for one night. Lito arrives, and across an evening two people try to find what to say. Max Walker-Silverman's first film builds a narrative in which almost nothing happens: landscape, silence and two people. Ageing and loneliness are presented here not as tragedy but as ordinary conditions. Dale Dickey, long seen in supporting roles, leads and carries the entire film. Wes Studi plays Lito. The minor characters drifting around the campsite give it an odd humour. Who it's for: Viewers who like quiet American independent cinema, love stories told late in life, and landscape-driven narrative. Who it's not for: Almost nothing happens and no dramatic development should be expected across its length. It asks for patience.
