Rebuilding

Dusty is a cowboy and his ranch is gone in a fire. The animals, the house, the land; none of it is left. He moves into the temporary trailer camp set up by FEMA. There are other families in the camp who lost their homes in the same fire; they are all meeting for the first time and trying to build a shared order. His daughter and his ex wife are nearby too. The distance between father and daughter was there before the fire, and now that there is nowhere to stand alone it meets him every day. Decisions about insurance, land and the future are waiting. Max Walker-Silverman writes and directs. Josh O'Connor plays Dusty; Lily LaTorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis and Amy Madigan are in the cast. The film is set in the San Luis Valley in Colorado and was shot there. The director's grandmother lost her home in a fire, and that shaped how he wrote the story. It premiered at Sundance on 26 January 2025; many in the room had been affected by the fires in Los Angeles in those same weeks. It opened on 14 November 2025 through Bleecker Street. The matter it treats is not the disaster but the long dull waiting after it; the film shows almost nothing of the fire. Its limit is pace; there is very little plot and the narrative is deliberately still. Who it is for: viewers who like quiet American independent drama and Josh O'Connor. Who it is not for: it is very slow, has no dramatic peak, and the subject is too close for some.
