What A Matter of Size Is About

This Israeli comedy directed by Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor opens with four overweight friends in Ramle who have had enough of dieting and of the slimming club they belong to. Herzl, who has lost his job as a cook and starts washing dishes in a Japanese restaurant, discovers sumo: a world where large people like him are not belittled but honoured. Kitano, who owns the restaurant, was a sumo coach in Japan, but he does not agree to train them straight away. The film inverts the obligation to lose weight and treats making peace with your body as a kind of coming out. It keeps the difference between mockery and laughing at yourself. It won three Israeli awards.
