Stick It

A girl who walked out of a gymnastics competition and quit the sport is sent by a court to a former coach's academy. She does not want to go back. What makes the film interesting is its finale: the girls refuse to compete against each other and turn on the scoring system itself. The narrative thus deliberately breaks the standard shape of the sports film, the single victory. Jessica Bendinger wrote and directed, having previously written a cheerleading film. Jeff Bridges plays the coach. Who it's for: those who like sports films and youth stories that argue with the rules. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a realistic account of gymnastics; the routines and the scoring are exaggerated.
