Eleven-year-old Margaret moves from New York to New Jersey. Her mother is Christian, her father is Jewish, and nobody has chosen a religion for her. What she does is talk to God every night, directly and without negotiation. Judy Blume withheld the rights to her 1970 novel for nearly fifty years. Kelly Fremon Craig wrote and directed, with James L. Brooks among the producers. Abby Ryder Fortson plays Margaret, Rachel McAdams her mother Barbara, Kathy Bates her grandmother Sylvia and Benny Safdie her father Herb. Hans Zimmer wrote the score and it was shot across North Carolina in 2021. It premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival on 23 April 2023 and opened five days later. The reviews were close to unanimous: 99 percent of 232 critics positive on Rotten Tomatoes and 84 on Metacritic. McAdams won Best Supporting Actress from several critics' groups and the film took Best Picture from the San Diego Film Critics Society. The box office did not follow. Against a 30 million dollar budget it took 21.5 million worldwide, opening third with 6.8 million. Who it is for: viewers who want puberty handled without embarrassment. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for conflict. The film stays deliberately small and never manufactures a crisis.
