What A Mother Should Be Loved Is About
Made in Yasujirō Ozu's silent period, this film opens with a woman raising two sons alone after her husband's death. One day the elder learns that she is not his mother but his stepmother, and he tells nobody. The younger believes his brother is always treated more gently and himself more harshly, and turns against her; in fact it is the reverse, since she is hard on her own son in order to protect the other. The film does not turn the misunderstanding into a game of secrets but asks how long silence can be carried inside a family. The first and last reels are lost, so the surviving print is missing the eight years before and the three years after the main story. The centre of it still stands.
