A Plastic Ocean

A Plastic Ocean, directed by Craig Leeson, had its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival on September 22, 2016. The project was filmed over four years across more than 20 locations, starting as an attempt to film blue whales before shifting course after discovering a thick layer of plastic debris in the middle of the Indian Ocean. World record free diver Tanya Streeter co-created the film; David Attenborough appears in it and called it one of the most important films of our time. The film reached number one in the documentary category on iTunes in the US, UK, and Canada; a 22 minute abridged version was screened for 700 members at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The film won more than 15 awards. Who it's for: anyone curious about an environmental documentary that shifted entirely from a blue whale filming project to a discovery of plastic pollution in the middle of the ocean, later screened at the United Nations. Who it's not for: viewers wanting to avoid disturbing footage, since the film directly shows plastic pollution in the oceans.
