Shark Whisperer

This 2025 Netflix documentary follows Ocean Ramsey, a marine conservationist based in Hawaii. Ramsey free dives with sharks, gets extremely close to them and at times touches them; that footage reaches millions on social media, and it is her main instrument. Her defence is clear: reducing people's fear of sharks is the fastest route to public pressure against their slaughter. The criticism from the scientific community is equally clear: contact of that kind stresses the animal, alters its natural behaviour and sets a dangerous example for viewers. Some critics also argue that conservation here has turned into personal brand-building. The documentary relays that argument but places its weight on Ramsey's side and gives limited room to scientific opinion. Who it's for: viewers who follow marine documentaries and debates about conservation. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a balanced assessment of the question; the film follows its subject's account.
