Inside the Mind of a Dog

Dogs have kept a partnership with humans going back as far as thirty thousand years, and across that time they learned to read us. The documentary looks at the science of that relationship: how dogs distinguish our facial expressions, what they perceive through smell, how attachment behaviour works. Alongside this it sets footage of puppy development and training. Andy Mitchell's film does not build a heavy scientific argument. The tone is light, Rob Lowe narrates, and there are as many everyday domestic scenes as laboratory experiments. The aim is curiosity rather than persuasion. Who it's for: Dog owners, anyone curious about animal behaviour, and viewers looking for a documentary to watch as a family. Who it's not for: The scientific depth is limited and the sources are passed over quickly. Anyone who knows the field will find little new.
