Whispers in the Woods

Vincent Munier is a wildlife photographer. In this film he returns to his own region: the forests of the Vosges. Two people are with him. His father Michel is a naturalist and passed the interest on to him. His son Simon is twelve at the time of shooting. The three of them wait for hours in the forest. The camera records deer, foxes, rare birds and lynx. The bird they wait for is very hard to see: the capercaillie. The film builds no documentary argument; there is no expert opinion and no narrator giving a lesson. The waiting, the silence and the weather are the film itself. Vincent Munier directs; it is his second feature. He appears in it with his father Michel and his son Simon. It is a French production and runs one hour thirty three minutes. It opened in France on 17 December 2025. It took a strong result at the box office, reaching close to one million three hundred thousand admissions. It won two awards at the César ceremony. The matter it treats is transmission; three generations in the same forest, and the film shows it without explaining it. The images were obtained through long waiting and none of them staged. The sound design is inside the narrative; the forest is largely built through hearing. Its limit is structure; the narrative is loose and offers little data to a viewer looking for information. Who it is for: viewers who like nature documentary and quiet cinema. Who it is not for: there is no event, the pace very low, and the information minimal.
