A Prominent Patient

America, 1939. After the German occupation, the Czechoslovak diplomat Jan Masaryk crosses to the United States as a man without a country. As ambassador in London he had failed to win British support and could not prevent his country's fall, and the weight of that does not leave him. In the company of a German émigré psychiatrist and the writer Marcia Davenport he tries to face his own past. Karel Roden plays Masaryk in Julius Ševčík's film. The real Masaryk served as foreign minister of the government in exile throughout the war and was found dead below his window at the ministry on 10 March 1948, two weeks after the communists took power. An investigation completed in 2004 concluded it was murder; another, closed in 2021, could reach no firm conclusion.
