The Realm

A regional politician is left alone when his party's corruption comes to light. Realising the whole thing will be pinned on him, he decides to use the recordings he holds. The film follows a man running, telephoning and bargaining almost throughout; the narrative builds no sympathy for him but has to seat the viewer on his side, because his is the only point of view. Sound design and long unbroken takes carry the tension. Rodrigo Sorogoyen directed, with Antonio de la Torre in the lead. It draws on Spanish corruption cases, though the characters are invented. Who it's for: those who like political thrillers and fast Spanish cinema. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear close on justice; the film leaves the system standing.
