What Mother Is About
Elena's six-year-old son disappeared ten years ago. The last thing she had from him was a phone call: he was lost on a beach in France and could not find his father. Elena now lives on that same beach and runs a restaurant. Just as she is starting to come through it, she meets a French teenager who reminds her powerfully of her son, and the relationship that forms between them unsettles everyone around them. Sorogoyen took the opening from a short film he had made earlier; that phone call runs unbroken in one take and is the tensest part of the film.
